Today,
I’m going to talk about ten (10) things you can do to start
preparing to live off the grid: preliminary things.
1. Read everything you
can about off the grid living. You might find interesting information
at the social network of off the grid at theoffgrid.com, members are
constantly posting about off the grid living. Some members write
articles for public consumption, and this is just the beginning. You
can also get your daily video/audio series at the site: that’s free
of charge. It’s only five minutes and you can learn a lot every
morning, it’s your choice.
2. Look at realistic
potential locations: look at the climate, land availability, taxes,
building code requirements and levelling options, freehold versus
leasehold; when you choose a new off the grid home, location is a
very important factor.
3. Study the shelter
possibilities based on your location, dig around then cover your
options when it comes to off the grid homes.
4. Examine your energy
and water options. I know it’s off the grid; we’re constantly
providing education on energy and water; two of the most important
elements in off the grid living. So, you’ll find doodles of
information on energy and water at The Off Grid.
5. Work out how you
provide your food supply; that’s very important. Of course, you’re
going to be working on food; we have lots of information on food.
Several of our lectures are on food, you can find complete five
minute presentations on hunting, gathering and gardening.
6. Explore money making
options: Well, unless you’ve got enough money for the rest of your
life, or some sort of steady income, you probably need to make some
money when you’re living off the grid; not as much as you need to
make living on the grid, but you want to make some and there are lots
of options for making money while living off the grid.
In fact, we just recently
did a presentation on money making opportunities while living off the
grid and I know one of our members living in Missouri, he’s writing
a paper right now for public consumption on the site, he works as a
web developer off the grid, and he’s going to share with us how he
does it; so, that would be coming in the next couple of weeks.
7. Take a course you can
always learn: you can always take a formal course free or paid.
8. Network with others
living off the grid; a great way to network with others living off
the grid is to join us at The Off Grid and meet some of your
neighbours, if you already own one of the subdivisions that all my
land sale sells in, or you can meet here, your potential new
neighbours, if you’re thinking about buying from Online Land Sales,
or if you just want to learn about off the grid living, that’s a
great resource. You’ll learn about everything from solar financing
to water purification; it’s a great resource and it’s free, and
you can network, you can get first-hand information from other off
the grid livers.
9. Get in good shape;
it’s not an easy lifestyle, and you would want to be fit for it.
10. Start an off the grid
living preparation supply list. This is the list of items that you’re
going to need. All of the education and training that you’re going
through right now will help you develop the list. The list is very
important, because we’re talking about living here, Right?
This is life or death.
You’re going to be able
to escape back to civilization to cover your mistakes, but you’re
going to take great pride and be very independent living off the
grid.
